Tom Baker was nominated for a couple Golden Globes for Nicholas and Alexandra in 1971, but I really have no idea if that means *anything.* It seems like we can categorize the actors thus:
Star: Peter Davison (using your "instantly recognizable on a British street" definition)
Household Names: Christopher Eccleston (he might easily have been considered a star if he'd been cast in the TV movie in 1996 right after Our Friends in the North, Cracker, and Shallow Grave, but I think his indie/prestige-heavy career choices meant he was more of just a household name in 2005, 28 Days Later notwithstanding), Jon Pertwee
Recognizable Faces: Paul McGann, William Hartnell
Rising Star: David Tennant
Working Actors: Patrick Troughton, Colin Baker
Near Unknowns: Sylvester McCoy, Tom Baker, Matt Smith
And that particular order is meant to reflect the revised rankings. I think we've done the world a very useful service.
